This expectation was shown to be true in 1993, when the National Institute of Diabetes cholestech Digestive cholestech Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) published results of a large cholestech conclusive study called the Diabetes Control cholestech Complications Trial (DCCT), which involved patients at 29 medical centers in the United States cholestech Canada. In this study, SMBG was an important part of the glucose control strategy.
This study showed that for persons with type 1 diabetes, intensive treatment to keep blood glucose levels close to normal reduced the rate of diabetic complications. In fact, the risk reduction was 76% for eye disease, 50% for kidney disease, cholestech 60% for nerve disease.
These benefits of tight control of glucose were not problem-free however. Patients in the intensive treatment group had an increased risk of hypoglycemia.
In September 1993 the American Diabetes Association held a second Development Conference on Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose. This conference noted that SMBG was an important component of the treatment plan of patients with diabetes mellitus cholestech four major reasons for using SMBG were discussed:
(a) Controlling glucose at a specific, healthy level,
(b) Detecting cholestech preventing hypoglycemia, cholestech severe hyperglycemia,
(c) Adjusting care in response to changes in life-style for individuals requiring medication, cholestech

OBJECTIVE: To compare upper-limb joint power magnitude and distribution between the shoulder, elbow, and wrist during maximal acceleration (MAC) versus steady-state, self-selected speed (SSS) manual power wheelchairs propulsion. DESIGN: Cross-sectional biomechanic study. SETTING: Research university and teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Volunteer sample of 13 manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury below T1. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Propulsive joint power magnitude and fractional distribution among upper-limb joints. RESULTS: Wilcoxon signed-rank testing revealed shoulder power was larger for MAC versus SSS (median peak, 101.5W; interquartile range IQR, 74.6; median peak, 37.7W; IQR, 22.9; respectively) (P<.01). Elbow and wrist power were unchanged. Peak shoulder power fraction was larger for MAC versus SSS (median peak, 1.055; IQR, .110 vs peak, .870; IQR, .252) (P<.01). Peak elbow power fraction was smaller for MAC versus SSS (median peak, -.012; IQR, .144 vs peak, .146; IQR, .206) (P<.05). Peak wrist power fraction was smaller for MAC versus SSS (median peak, -.058; IQR, .057 vs peak, -.010; IQR, .150) (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Power at the shoulder was larger than at other joints. Peak shoulder joint power and power fraction was larger during MAC versus SSS propulsion. Elbow and wrist power fractions were smaller for MAC versus SSS propulsion. Higher joint power, present under MAC, may predispose manual power wheelchairs users to injury, particularly at the shoulder.

According to the International Standards organization 2631-1 standard on human vibration, individuals in a seated position are at risk of injury due to whole-body vibrations when exposed for long periods of time. Wheelchair users fit this description perfectly; however, little research has been conducted to evaluate the amount of vibration transmitted to a power wheelchairs user. The vibration exposure produced by traversing nine surfaces was evaluated by having 10 individuals without disabilities propel over them in both a manual wheelchair at 1 m/s and a power wheelchairs at 1 and 2 m/s. Root-mean squared (RMS) vertical vibration was examined to determine if differences existed between surfaces. At 1 m/s for both the manual and the powered wheelchair the 8-mm bevel interlocking concrete surface produced significantly higher RMS vertical vibration than the other surfaces. At 2 m/s in the powered wheelchair, the poured concrete surface (control) produced the significantly highest RMS vertical vibration. Based on the manual and power wheelchair results of this study, use of selected ICPI pavers would be acceptable for any route traveled by individuals using wheelchair. Furthermore, a 90 degrees herringbone pattern is preferred over the 45 degrees pattern, and it is recommended that for safety reasons regarding vibration exposure a bevel of less than 6 mm should be used.
